The New Zealand flag is blue with the Union Jack in the upper left. Four red five-pointed stars edged in white are centered on the outer half. The stars represent the Southern Cross constellation.

The New Zealand flag is similar in to the Australian flag. Notable points of difference between are: the New Zealand flag has nothing in the lower left quadrant occupied by the Commonwealth Star in the Australian flag and its Southern Cross comprises four white-edged red stars whereas these five stars in the Australian flag are all white.

New Zealand is a world leader in agricultural research. Sheep were introduced by Captain Cook in 1773 and today there are 50 million sheep, that is 12 sheep per person.



Beef cattle are mostly in the north of the North Island, dairying in the central North Island, and sheep with cattle in the hills and in the south of the North Island. On the South Island sheep farming is the main form of agriculture with a some beef cattle in the hills and some dairying on the flat land of both coasts.




The Maori are the native inhabitants of New Zealand from Polynesian origin. The Maori comprise 14% of New Zealand's population. Over 95% percent of Maori live on New Zealand's North Island.




New Zealand is located 1,400 miles off the coast of Australia. New Zealand has a population of 4.4 million people (2010). Nearly 85% of New Zealand's population lives in urban areas and more than one-third of the population is in the city of Auckland.

We will be entering New Zealand through the city of Whakatane in the Bay of Plenty region of the North Island. The Whakantane district has a population of 32,000. The largest city is in the district is Whakatane, with a population of 15,000, and is the administrative center for the Eastern Bay of Plenty.

Whakatane is inundated with Maori history. 40% of the population is Maori whereas the overall population of Maori in New Zealand is 14%.
